United States International University–Africa’s (USIU-Africa) Culture Week is an annual event held from 8th March to 17th March at the Nairobi campus of the university. During the event different nationalities present in the university are given the opportunity to showcase their cultural diversity through music, dance, fashion, language, food among others.
This year’s celebration started with each community preparing their local mouth-watering dishes and Ghana team was selected to display their food on 8th March 2022. The team prepared among others jollof rice, beans stew with fried plantain, shito, palmnut soup. These dishes were served with chilled glass of “sobolo” (a local hibiscus drink).
Also the Ghana team exhibited some artifacts and fabrics including Ghana flags, stool, fan, baskets, drums, kente fabrics, men and women Ankara prints, waist beads, black soap and shea butter on 15th and 16th March 2022.
It may be noted that for the first time in the history of the university, the presence of the Ghanaian community was greatly felt with performances such as the “kpalongo” dance from the Ga traditional area of Ghana and some “azonto” moves with afrobeat music.
Importantly, the Ghanaian Community emerged 1st runner-up for “THE BEST REPRESENTED RESEARCHED CULTURE” award.
