  1. The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 independent and equal countries. It is home to about 2.5 billion people, and includes both advanced economies and developing countries. Commonwealth countries together with their governments have shared and common goals towards development, democracy and peace. The last countries to join the Commonwealth are Gabon and Togo which was announced during the CHOGM 2022 in Rwanda.
  2. This year, Commonwealth leaders from across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, the Pacific and Europe travelled to Rwanda in person for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic to reaffirm their common values and policies to improve the lives of all their citizens. The theme for CHOGM 2022 was ‘Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming.’ This theme highlights how the 54 member countries in the Commonwealth family are ‘innovating, connecting and transforming’ to help achieve some of its biggest goals, like protecting natural resources and boosting trade. It was chosen because Commonwealth countries are connected by deep-rooted networks of friendship and goodwill.
